Television shows, sitcoms and Hollywood movies often portray the humorous side in this task, with outdoor lighting often posing comical activities.

For example, in the 1989 comedy, "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," viewers laugh as Clark Griswold Jr. (aka Chevy Chase) wires his home to the max, killing the power in the rest of the neighborhood and misdirecting flights as his wife finally turns the right switch on, connecting what appears to be nuclear power to light the display.

With Tim the Tool Man from sitcom, "Home Improvements," viewers witness equally funny episodes during Christmas where Tim tried to outdo his neighbors with The Best display on the block. Yet he often electrocutes himself or others, or somehow destroys the project.

While Christmas outdoor lighting may pose funny issues, there are really not many basic steps involved. To complete this task, try these simple steps:

1) Begin with lighting - do you have what you need from last year? Have a hearty breakfast, lunch, dinner or at least a snack, and then go look! Find any lights you have available. And gather them into one area.

2) Testing time! In a safe manner (i.e. not standing in a puddle of water), test the strings of lights to see how many work, how many need new bulbs and how many are just ready for retired - the trash. Separate your work, placing strings that are ready to go in one area, strings to toss in another, etc.

3) Next either plan a design using what you have on hand, or check your budget to add more lighting for the season, and review current ads and websites to find the best deals. To determine how many strings you'll need for your home, you can measure the length of the area you want to light up, then add on about another 30 or so feet for extra, just in case. Include not only your house in this measurement, but any trees, shrubs, etc., as well.

4) Once you find the best deal for your lighting, use your measurements to see how many strings of lights you'll need. You'll generally find strings that boast a minimum of 25 lights up to a maximum of 200 lights, with 50 lights per foot with regular bulbs, double with miniature bulbs. Choose your colors and get extra connectors (3-pronnged, if needed - check the strands).

5) Decorate in a safe manner, with someone holding your ladder. Or hire this done by local contractors who advertise this time of year on the classified ads (check Craigslist, too!)

6) When the holiday is over, gently wrap the strands around cardboard to keep strands from getting tangled. Then store in safe, dry place. You can find sturdy plastic and other types of containers at local Wal-Mart and other family stores. Search warehouse odd lots, too, for good buys.

Thus you have your Christmas outdoor lighting: 6 steps to set up your Christmas outdoor lighting. Happy holidays!

Easy Breezy Summer Patio

Create that perfect 'staycation' summer patio the whole family will enjoy! These quick and easy ideas will have you spending more time enjoying your outdoor spaces, less time preparing them and loving every minute of it.

Fast redo for worn out patio furniture. Spray paint it. It's quick and cheap. These days you can buy spray paint for any surface from wood and wicker, to metal and even plastic! Spray several thin coats rather than one thick coat to keep the finish even and free of runs.

Revitalize your furniture cushions without sewing! All you need is fabric and heavy duty tape. You can use any fabric that you have on hand. If it's not outdoor fabric, just bring your cushions in when necessary. Simply wrap your cushions and tape the fabric down on the underside side. Add a splash of color with reversible throw pillows. Use brightly colored cloth napkins or bandannas to sandwich a small pillow form. Tie the fabric in a knot at the four corners.

Designer patio rug for cement patios and wooden decks. This is a great project to get the kids to help with. Use sidewalk chalk to draw any rug size or shape to fits your space. Paint it with outdoor paint. This is a handy way to use up any small bits of leftover paint you may have laying around! Paint a fast color block and consider it done. Or have fun and create any pattern that pleases. Painted fringe adds to the illusion. Small imperfections will make it more believable, so don't worry about making it perfect.

Crazy easy summer foliage. For ultra inexpensive greenery, plant grass seed in your pots or large bowls. Just let it fill in and grow. Simple, charming and no mowing required!

Mood lighting sets the tone! Make your own inexpensive outdoor lanterns with common household items. Line the bottom of glass jars with sand and place a candle inside. For extra color, stain the sand with food coloring before using. Use citronella candles for double duty. Keep it safe and never leave candles unattended. Don't place them on a flammable surface or in a draft.

Charming outdoor spaces are so simple to create. No matter if you have a small balcony or a large backyard, these simple facelifts will brighten it right up. It's time you enjoy your summer patio!

Cathy Robertson is an Artist and writer for Fine Art Castle. With fresh air and the sounds of nature and nice neighborhoods, people discover that some of life's stresses seem to melt away in the backyard.

Not too many years ago, outdoor cooking meant a tiny grill with little or no working space. This meant many trips to and from the house, a weathered old picnic table, and generally many inconveniences.

Currently, people are taking steps to claim their backyard as an extension of the comforts of their home. Manufacturers of outdoor cooking products have responded with a huge supply of products. Some examples are: large grills that make cooking easier, outdoor pizza ovens, cabinets specifically for the outdoors, and large entertaining areas.

These days, there is something for every budget, and even small upgrades can improve the outdoor cooking experience. Here are some tips to get started planning a small but nice outdoor kitchen:

A modest outdoor kitchen usually consists of a built-in gas or charcoal grill set into 6 foot long counter and a couple of cabinets below the grill. If you are currently used to cooking on a tiny grill with little or no flat surface area, then this will be a major outdoor kitchen upgrade. It will also provide a stable cooking appliance and an area for preparing vegetables and other foods for cooking.

For the easiest installation, buy an all-in-one grill unit. Some units contain a built-in refrigerator and/or overhead lighting. Consider the simplest unit if your backyard space is limited. If you only grill occasionally, a big outdoor cooking system might be a little more than you need.

Adding Touches to Your Patio and Outdoor Kitchen

If you would like to take the simple counter and grill a step further, consider some of these options:

-Add a raised counter or outdoor bar, sitting either to the side of or on the opposite side of the grill station. This allows you to bring family members and friends closer to the cook, giving the cookout a better social atmosphere.

-If you install an electric line and an outdoor receptacle near the grill station counter, you will be able to run various electrical appliances, such as a refrigerator, food processor, or electric knife. This is always a better option than just running an extension cord outside.

-If your counter is near the house and close to the indoor kitchen, it might be inexpensive to hook up a sink to the cutting area. This will be very helpful in food preparation and cleanup.

-Think about building a fire pit in the yard. This will add kind of a campfire-like experience to your cookouts. It will also make the outdoor kitchen area appear bigger and more user-friendly.

-Nice looking patio furniture also gives off a more comfortable feel and enhances the setting.

-Low-voltage lighting, for a relatively low price, will create a nice ambience to the whole backyard kitchen setting.

If you live in a climate where you can cook outdoors more often, then by all means, build to suit that lifestyle. If the climate or your lifestyle does not permit outdoor cooking as often, then scale down your outdoor grill area plans to fit those needs. Remember, there really is never any need to create more of an outdoor kitchen than what your budget or your time will allow.

Billy Bristol is the editor and chief bbq pitmaster for TexasBarbeques.com, an outdoor cooking and entertaining website devoted to backyard living. So you think your home is at the cutting edge of fashion when it comes to having all the latest trends. Or is it? The latest trend is to have an orangery attached to the back of your property. Similar to conservatories, an orangery is fast becoming the must have accessory for uber trendy homes. However orangeries are not a new thing at all.

Orangeries were actually very popular amongst the upper classes they were found in the grounds of fashionable residences during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. As the name suggests they were used as a place to grow citrus trees as they could not survive outside during the winter in the UK climate. With the increase in travel around the globe orangeries became more popular as explorers brought seeds and plants back from around the world which in order to survive needed to be housed inside yet needed the maximum daylight possible. The orangery soon became a symbol of status no longer were they just used for practical purposes. They became an important feature of the garden as owners would take their guests on tours of their orangeries to admire the exotic fruits and plants. Very soon orangeries themselves started to become more lavish and were admired as part of the tour. The orangery became an area to entertain in inclement weather.

This was the beginning of what we now know as an orangery today which is often referred to as the next generation of conservatory. There are however subtle differences between a conservatory and a orangery. An orangery is actually a cross between what we think of as a traditional extension and a conservatory. They benefit from glass roofs which make them feel very light and airy yet the stone or brick columns used to support the roof of the orangery help to create a substantial structure which is cosy and useable throughout the year.

An orangery creates a really unique space and offers a great alternative to a conventional brick extension or conservatory. For this reason they are becoming more and more popular. Orangeries can really help to add space to your house and can be used for many different purposes. They are a great place to relax in with your family but equally can be brilliant for entertaining friends and neighbours. By adding French doors to your orangery it can help to bridge the gap between your house and garden and can be great for summer BBQs when it gets a little chilly outside but you don't really want to go inside.

Orangeries come in a whole host of shapes and sizes and can be built out of a variety of different materials so you are bound to find a style which is in keeping with the rest of your home. You can choose to have a standard orangery installed or alternatively you can choose to have a custom made bespoke orangery built to fit in with your own personal specifications.

For more information on Orangeries Wales and Conservatories Wales please visit our website or call into your local show room.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Scott_A_Wells

Designer Outdoor Rugs

Clean up your Act

What does summer mean to you? For you it could signal nice weather, the warm sunshine, blue skies, blooming flowers and the sounds of birds, and children playing. Along with all these lovely aspects of summer there are other things that this 'nice weather' leads too. The inevitable feature is that more activity comes in, and out, and in and out of the house. This can leave you reeling as dirty sneakers get tracked from the door, undoubtedly in a direct path to the fridge! Did you really think they were taking their shoes off when you weren't there policing them?

Even just outside the back door, as you make your way to sit in a comfy lawn chair, your doing running the slalom course around muddy dog paw prints, grass, leaves and perhaps even a puddle from dripping Popsicles. On a concrete or interlock this can be challenging to sweep away a sticky muddy mess. Washing it down means starting at one side and moving all the dirt across until it's gone off the other side, so it's not a short simple process. A solution could be as simple and attractive as a designer outdoor rug for heavy foot traffic.

There are a collection of outdoor rugs manufactured from DuraCord® that offer many features that would be perfect for the areas that see the most activity and with the added benefit of being stain resistant and as easy to clean as throwing a little soap and water on them. They don't have a tacky 'synthetic' appearance either. The patterns and rich colors make a very attractive addition to your outdoor living space yet have a life span 2 times longer than polyester. The feel is as soft as cotton yet offers superior abrasion resistance, no moisture pick up so no microbial growth and the fibers are resistant to fading.

These are built to suit their tough environment and anything a kid, dog, or the neighborhood barbecue you had can throw their way. So as you sit enjoying your friends company and see a burger fall on your carpet, or more Popsicle stains, or a drink gets knocked over you can relax knowing that there is no harm done and clean up is simple. With outdoor events this can be critical as these messes can bring out little insects hunting those leftovers as well. One great way to enjoy this beautiful time of year is by entertaining guests, friends, and family outdoors. However, before planning a barbecue or party in your backyard, be sure that your home is properly prepared for the occasion.
Outdoor parties are fun for everyone, but once the rain starts falling or the sun is beating down on your guests excessively, the fun and the party can fall apart. If your home has a covered patio, you will not have to worry about the weather turning bad.

Covered patios are perfect, because your guests can enjoy the outdoors rain or shine, while also enjoying a bit of shade from the sun's scorching direct rays.

If your patio or deck is uncovered, you can install a patio cover kit or an awning for a relatively low cost. An aluminum awning is especially cost effective due to aluminum's great durability. Many aluminum awnings even come with a lifetime warranty.

A patio awning will provide your party with shade, helping to keep your guests comfortable and cool and also protecting them from the harmful ultra violet rays from the sun. An awning can also provide cover from the rain in the event of a storm or shower.

Once your have your patio cover taken care of, you will now need to think about where your guests can sit and dine. The right patio dining furniture set will provide your guests with a place to sit down, relax, and eat. An outdoor dining set can also help give your patio the beautiful look you want.

Patio furniture comes in many different forms, including wicker, aluminum, wrought iron, wood, and even plastic. Wicker and wood furniture sets offer a great look and feel, while aluminum and plastic can deliver durability and a wallet friendly price. You will want to balance out your personal tastes and your budget to find the right furniture set for your patio.

Once you have the right patio, awning or cover, and outdoor dining set, you will be ready to start planning your party or event. So go ahead and start making the guest list, fire up the grill, and mix up the drinks, because you are ready to enjoy the great outdoors without fear of the weather turning bad!

M. Watching the clouds float by, listening to the sounds of the birds and crickets chirping. One of the best ways to enjoy your backyard is with a hammock or hammock swing.

There are many different types of materials to choose from. There are rope hammocks, which are made from cotton rope or soft polyester rope, as well as, cotton hammocks, fabric hammocks, and nylon hammocks.

There are also many different styles of hammocks to choose from. You have your portable hammocks, which are made out of parachute material, weighing in at only eleven ounces, making them extremely lightweight and easy to pack. Camping hammocks, which are also light weight, yet very durable, and of course your traditional, large hammock that you will be spending many sleepy afternoons on.

One thing you will want to consider when making your hammock purchasing decisions, is, do you have a couple of trees to hang your hammock from? If you do not, no need to put away those dreams of hammock life, simply purchase a hammock stand, and you are all set. Think of all the lazy summer afternoons, swaying in the breeze in your back yard, maybe a small table next to you for a cool drink, in between naps.

If you have a spouse, or children that will be sharing your hammock with you, be sure to keep that in mind when making your purchase. Especially when making your hammock stand purchase. You will find that you can purchase many styles of hammock stands, in many different types of materials. Be aware that most hammock stands will have a weight limit rating posted on the box, or in the description, and you will definitely want to pay close attention to this limit.

Maybe you are not looking for something as large as a hammock, possibly just a hammock swing. A hammock swing is going to have a much smaller footprint, making it perfect for a smaller backyard. However, do not be fooled, you will still be nodding off just as quickly and easily when you are swaying in the breeze on your hammock swing. You will find that, just as with the hammock, if you don't have trees in your backyard, you are still going to be able to enjoy your hammock swing, with the use of a hammock swing stand.

You will want to be sure to take care of your new hammock, or hammock swing. They are not meant for bouncing, or jumping on, and doing so, can result in injury, as well as destroying your hammock. If you take care of your new hammock, it will take care of you, and those lazy afternoons, for years to come.

A great addition to the backyard area or patio decor is a relaxing cotton hammock.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Lindy_Smart

Transform Your Porch With Porch Enclosures

Porch enclosures can transform your so-so porch into an amazing screen porch, 3-season room or sun room. Porch enclosures range from outdoor curtain systems and simple DIY in-a-weekend kits to more complex units that are custom-made and installed by technicians. From curtains to elegant open air systems, there's an enclosure to fit every need and budget. We purchased and installed a DIY enclosure kit to make a screened porch a number of years ago and were extremely glad we did. It's a great investment and will give you many hours of outdoor comfort. Porch enclosures give you instant benefits.

Practically maintenance free; most porch enclosures are made from aluminum and require little upkeep. Enclosures automatically

extend the living space of your home

give you bug-free outdoor enjoyment

give you shelter from the elements

provide instant shade to keep you cool.

add beauty and functionality to your home

Outdoor curtains are an easy and very economical way to create a porch enclosure. Use them for the entire porch or create your own privacy nook. They come in wide variety of colors, patterns, and materials to fit every decorating style. There's nothing like the look of outdoor curtains swaying in a summer breeze!
Have an awning? Why not turn it into a screen room also. Versatile, this option is very cost effective and gives you great flexibility. It stores easily when not in use, is very easy to install when needed, comes with door openings, and is almost maintenance free.

DIY screen room kits come in standard sizes but can be modified by the manufacturer to fit your specific needs if required. These can be assembled by almost anyone in a weekend and can turn a porch or deck into a bug-free haven. More sophisticated models are available also. Contractors will meet with you to determine your specific needs and your screen or 3-season porch will be manufactured to your specifications. Delivered right to your home, these can usually be assembled quite easily or you could hire a contractor to assist.

Some enclosures can also be modified to fit your specific needs. Have a space or live in an area where you don't need an enclosure year round? For the discriminating homeowner we found just the thing for you - an open wall system to blend indoor and outdoor spaces of your residence with unobstructed views. The panels quickly fold out of the way for instant open-air living or close them and have a unique enclosure. You can use them under decks, for patios, or for spaces that are not easily accessed.

When you want to expand your living space, bring the outside in, and do it quickly, consider a porch enclosure. You are sure to find a model and style to meet your every need.

To learn much more about front porch enclosures and to be inspired by beautiful front porch pictures, please visit http://www.front-porch-ideas-and-more.com/porch-enclosures.html.

Dave R. By making your own covers you get get the design and colours that you want. Making your own covers will also save you money. I have seen patio set covers made out of a variety of different fabrics. There is no right fabric. The choice of fabric is up to the individual taste.

It is important that your patio furniture be protected from the elements. The amount of protection your furniture will need is dependent upon where you live. Those people that live in tropical areas will want to protection their furniture from the blazing sun or salt spray every chance they get. The tropical sun will remove an entire layer of varnish in less than 6 months. Unless you don't mind sanding and re-varnishing you best acquire some covers for your patio furniture.

The covers can be made out of any material you wish. More expensive materials can include some UV protection and water proofing but this is not always necessary. I have seen covers made out of old sailboat sails. I've also seen covers made from burlap potato bags and plasticized sand bags. The covers can literally be made of anything.

The most important thing to keep in mind is proper measurement of your furniture. You know the saying: "measure twice and cut once". The patio table cover will need to be made from a piece of material that is 8 inches longer and 8 inches wider than the table top. I stitch over 3/4s of an inch and run a drawstring through the tunnel. It really couldn't be easier.

Covers for patio chairs are slightly more challenging. These can either be fitted or bag style. Clearly the bag style is the easiest to sew. Simply measure the height and the width of the chair. I stitch two ends of the material together to make a circle. I then cut a round top that can then easily be stitched to the top of the circle.

I generally free hand my patterns. However, if you want some more guidance then there are plenty of patterns to choose from at your local fabric store. The most common patterns are for 4 chairs and table but there are also patterns for chaise lounge covers. Making your own outdoor patio furniture covers is fun and easy.

Jane A. What can I do to cheer up the area and create a wonderful outdoor room? A friend of mine suggested that accessorizing would be the way to go. Have you looked at what's available for outdoor spaces these days - where to start first? Okay then jumping right in!

Starting at the beginning, I have a nice teak wood patio furniture set and some cushions would help to make it more comfortable as well as provide some color. They are also easy to change if I get bored of them! I did look at the colors and styles available and one of the things that struck me was to consider whether I need them to be waterproof or not. The waterproof outdoor patio furniture cushions are made from plastic and aren't very comfortable, so I decided to buy outdoor patio furniture covers to keep everything nice. That also means that I can have the soft comfy cushions on the outside chairs without worrying about bringing them in every night, one. Step one done!

My friend said that an umbrella has one of the biggest impacts on a patio area as it is so eye catching when up. So did I need an umbrella? Well I could look at other options to provide some shade such as a shade cloth over the area, but I thought I would like to see the winter sun without a cover - I can always put the umbrella away in winter. So I found an umbrella in a matching shade to my cushions and was set.

Thinking about winter led me on to heating. If I can heat my patio area we will be able to use it for much more of the year. Did you know there are a variety of different ways to heat the outdoor space, from space heaters to chimeras and Roman fire tables. I had a look at chimeras, they come in many styles and can be used to heat and cook on (especially marshmallows).

Along with heating comes lighting-we could add some lighting to make the patio area a real outdoor room. If we used fairy lights we may not even have to add extra outdoor Christmas lights. Fairy lights twinkling add such a lovely atmosphere to a summer evening outside. We could also add candles or solar lighting, which has a nice effect when it comes on by its self as it gets dark.

There are many other accessories that can be added to your outside living space, such as sound system and outdoor splash proof TV to watch all the great sports and games, hammocks, rugs, insect repellants, plants and planter boxes.

Right now I think I'll just add a drink trolley and get myself a lovely cool drink and sit down in my outdoor patio area to watch the game!

David Streetman has an interest in things to do with the garden, especially relaxing on the patio. The FSC is a third party not for profit organization established to ensure the wood you are purchasing has been responsibly harvested.

There are many FSC decking options on the market but not all of them are created equal. There are domestic woods like cedar and thermal treated softwoods like pine, these domestic materials have a life expectancy of about 15 years if maintained properly.

Of course you can use these materials and have many years of enjoyment on your deck, but you should be aware that they will require power washing and staining at least every other year.

An increasingly popular alternative to domestic wood decking would be exotic wood that comes from South America. These exotic materials can last 40 years or more with no maintenance at all. Woods like Ipe, Tigerwood, Cumaru and Garapa are some of the densest and durable hardwoods you can find. As a result these materials are naturally resistant to mold, mildew and wood boring insects like termites. These materials also have a high slip resistance, a natural class A rating for flame spread and they do not splinter or contain knots which is why they make excellent decking and dock material.

FSC Ipe Decking and Tigerwood Decking are two of the most sought after FSC decking materials due to their longevity and beauty. The demand for these materials is also increasing due to the growth of the green and eco friendly building industry.

Jon Fletcher is a knowledgeable hardwood decking expert at Advantage Trim & Lumber that has been supplying builders, contractors and homeowners with Ipe Decking, Tigerwood Decking, Cumaru Decking, Garapa Decking and over 55 species of hardwood flooring for nearly 20 years.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jon_Fletcher

Fix Up Your Front Porch

If you have a front porch, consider yourself lucky. I'd love to have a welcoming veranda on the front of my house, where I can sit and watch the world go by or chat with friends. Porches can be problematic, however, especially if they fall into disrepair. Fortunately, fixing up your front porch is easy - and the result boosts your home's curb appeal and offers a brand-new alfresco living area you can enjoy every day.

Just follow these 5 steps to take your front porch from failing to fabulous in no time.

1. Fix problem areas.
If your porch is suffering from sagging or warped boards, your first priority is to fix the porch floor. This project (which can be tackled in half a day) involves pulling up the old boards, installing new decking and trim, and sanding. While you have the boards pulled up, it's a good idea to inspect the joists underneath the deck for signs of rot. If it looks questionable under there, Calfinder recommends contacting a licensed professional for an inspection. You'll also want to make certain the porch stairs are secure. And while you're at it, why not add some architectural detail? You can find inexpensive trim suitable for your porch at most local home improvement stores.

2. Paint the porch.
Once you've fixed problem areas and sanded, it's time to paint. First, you want to make sure you pick the right paint. Options for porches and decks include epoxy, alkyd, latex, polyurethane, and rubber-based paints. While you're painting, you'll likely want to paint your porch trim, posts, and other exposed parts so they coordinate with your new porch floor.

3. Add furniture.
Now comes the fun part. How many furnishings you can reasonably add to your porch will depend on its size. A big wraparound provides plenty of space for multiple seating areas. Perhaps you'll designate one area for dining, another as an area for sitting and chatting with friends, and a third as a private escape for reading or relaxing. Even if your porch isn't that large, you can still include distinctive seating areas - perhaps a spot for dining plus a bench or a couple of chairs near the door for relaxing. Just avoid cluttering the space with too many furnishings - you should be able to easily to move around what's there. What kind of furniture you pick is up to you. With protected front porches, you can pick furnishings that are designed for use indoors or out - although outdoor furniture will last longer. Plan to store furnishings out of the elements during winter months to further extend their life.

4. Accessorize.
The same fundamentals that you use when decorating an indoor space apply with outdoor rooms too. Accessories will take your front porch from impersonal to warm and welcoming. Start by adding some throw pillows or chair cushions in playful patterns and colors. What other touches can you include to make this space feel like home? For personality and privacy, consider hanging curtains around your porch. Use an outdoor rug to delineate living spaces. Or paint your own right on the porch floor. A lamp rated for outdoor use or hanging lanterns allow you to extend your time on the porch past sunset. And the little touches - candles, a framed photo, a side table for perching drinks - make a difference too.

5. Add plants.
An outdoor space (or indoor space for that matter) isn't complete without plants. The easiest way to add fresh foliage to your revamped porch is by placing a few potted plants next to seating areas or hanging pots from the porch ceiling.

But the landscaping in front of the porch matters too. You can go lush or keep things simple with a few carefully selected bushes and perennials. Either way, the right plantings will draw the eye, and your welcoming front porch will keep it there!

The Home Know-It-All Your One-Stop Shop for Home Design, Improvement, and Repair

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Julie_Collins

Outdoor Lighting Techniques

Outdoor lighting is like interior design in one crucial way. That is that there is just no mistaking a professional job from an amateur job. Walk through an exclusive vacation resort for instance and you will see that the interior decorating job was obviously given to a professional. Take a walk outside that same resort at night and you will notice the same with the outdoor lighting.

Outdoor Lighting Tricks That the Experts Use

So does this mean that everyone has to run out and procure the services of a outdoor lighting design expert? Not at all! Because there are ways that you can steal some of the tricks that they use from their "play book".

Outdoor Lighting and Shadows

For instance, a professional outdoor lighting design consultant knows that lighting produces shadows. This particularly holds true with any type of spotlighting. Take the time to experiment with statuary and large plants when positioning spotlights to get the full effect from any shadows that are created.

Be Careful When Positioning Powerful Area Lighting

The last thing that you want is a "prison yard" effect from any lighting that is used to light an area. Hence; just as with spot lighting, positioning is crucial, so you might consider locating powerful lighting off to the side or even buffer it by positioning it behind landscaping.

Subtle Yet Effective Outdoor Mood Lighting

Far too often when people hear the phrase "colored mood lighting" they immediately conjure up pictures of stark reds, blues or other standard colors. The truth is that you can effect a mood with lighting by using subtle, "almost undetectable" shades of peach, pink, turquoise, yellows or even teal.

Article was written by Susan Powell. Some people prefer to keep it simple, and add just a picnic table or patio set. Others have created magnificent outdoor rooms, which are as comfortable as any room inside of their home.

There are as many styles of outdoor furniture as one can imagine. From rustic unfinished furniture to ornate Victorian or Gothic style furniture, the possibilities are endless. Just as is the case inside of your home, you will want to choose a style before you begin purchasing separate pieces, unless you are going for an eclectic look.

Once you have decided on what type of style you would like to achieve, you may begin purchasing your outdoor furniture. The best place to begin is with seating and tables. You may decide to go with a traditional patio set, or a weather friendly sofa with matching end tables and coffee table, for the patio. You may choose something more down to earth for the deck, such as Adirondack chairs. You will also have the opportunity to choose cushions for your chairs. There are many different patterns and color schemes to choose from.

If you have a larger yard with gardens, you will certainly want to have a place nearby to sit and relax while enjoying the lovely flowers. There are many different types and styles of bench seats and gliders available for this purpose. You will even have the choice of metal, resin, or a variety of water resistant woods.

A pergola or gazebo is an excellent choice for almost any yard. There are many different styles available, including those which are screened in. These may be lighted and even used at night, without concern about mosquitoes and other pests.

There are many local stores that sell outdoor furniture. From large furniture dealers, to discount stores, you are sure to find what you are looking for. These days, you may even choose and purchase your outdoor furniture online, without ever leaving the comfort of your own home.

Trellises, bridges and landscape screens can all be purchased from the dealer who sells your outdoor furniture. These are all excellent choices, and are certain to add to the beauty of your yard.

To find great deals on cheap outdoor furniture, visit this online shopping deals website.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jennifer_K_Crawley

Using An Outdoor Mat In Your Hammock

Love to use your hammock but don't want to ruin the grass around it?

Don't you just hate the look of a 'dead grass' patch when you've had something sitting on it? Yuck. It's an eye sore that no one wants. The question is how do you get around it? Cover the back yard with bricks, flagstones or a layer of concrete. That WILL work but may not be the most comfortable, and certainly no the most attractive. The idea is to enjoy the natural lush green that makes you feel like you are part of the outdoors when you are relaxing in your yard, or playing in your yard.

Consider using an outdoor mat underneath the hammock in the backyard. It's attractive, easy to clean, reduced the little critter that would fly up from the grass, and best of all it doesn't kill the grass underneath it. It's a great feature because when you work to keep it trimmed, green, and free of weeds and dandelions the last thing you want is for your outdoor furnishing to kill what you have worked to achieve. Add to the list of benefits is the idea that the mat will pick up grass, dirt and debris off your shoes so it's not lifted up onto the hammock. Who wants to lie in dirt? No me!

This is just a simple tip to keep your backyard space attractive and your oasis for rest and relaxation neat and clean, while in the process you are protecting your lawn by simply using an outdoor mat under your hammock.

If you enjoy relaxing in a hammock but don't like the idea of killing the grass under it try using an outdoor mat underneath it.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Lindy_Smart

Protecting Outdoor Furnishing With An Awning

The sun can be brutal. While it provides all the energy that our world needs to survive, its rays also destroy our skin and many of the fabrics that we have created. Sun damage is one the most common reasons why patio furniture is needs to be replace. You can protect your investment by getting a patio awning that will protect your furniture while at the same time creating a shady living space for you and your family to enjoy.

Things like patio chairs, both in their traditional and reclining variety, suffer considerably under the hot sun. Their fabric begins to fade rather quickly as UVA and UVB begin to break down the pigmentation that gives your patio the feel that you spent so much time planning. There are some chairs that are sun resistant, but over time all things begin to fade and this is especially true for chair that suffer from the elements and from human use.

Another feature on many different patios or decks is wood. The wood could be a furnishing, like a bench or table. These are generally a much larger investment for families and should be preserved as best as possible. You will want to finish these products well but you are also going to want to give it an extra level of protection by installing a patio awning.

This could be an awning of the retractable variety so that you can have sun when it suits you but also be able to enjoy the shade when you or your patio furniture needs it. These awnings come in all different shapes and sizes and can meet the year round needs of your family for a very reasonable price. Patio awnings are also know to help increase the value of home since they increase the amount of livable space on a property. Retractable awnings are particularly useful for this purpose.

The reason that they can increase the value of a home is because a patio awning is going to turn a patch of concrete into a shaded oasis for your family to sit comfortably in the heat of the day or the cool of the evening. Being in the shade can be as much as 20 degrees cooler than being in direct sunlight in some environments, bringing a hot 90 degree day down to a very comfortable 70 degrees. Sometimes a patio can be even cooler than actually being inside your house.

Awnings do a great job of increasing the life of a outdoor furnishings by protecting them from the elements, but particularly the sun's harmful rays. They also create a shaded haven for your family to escape the heat and enjoy the outdoors when the summer wants to keep you inside. Patio awnings also have the added benefit of improving the energy efficiency of a home that has windows that soak up sunlight by shading them from the sun's heat.

Joe writes for Patio Awnings Inc, a site dedicated to informing and educating the public about patio awnings and their effectiveness at creating outdoor space for their families. It's possible to spend a lot of money on patio furniture, but it's also possible to pick up very cheap patio furniture. The cheap type is made out of aluminum. Often, these aluminum chairs fold up, and the seats and backs are made out of strips of strong fabric. These chairs, often called beach chairs or lawn chairs are very cheap, but you only get what you pay for. They won't last for more than a few years, and they're likely to blow all around if you leave them out during a storm.

Metal patio furniture is another option, and it's usually not too costly. These chairs and even "sofas"-two seaters-are made entirely out of lightweight metal. Unlike the aluminum chairs with fabric seats, these metal chairs will last longer, although you may have to repaint them every now and then. They're generally not too expensive, although they will cost more than cheap folding chairs. In addition to chairs, you may also find cheap metal tables. These tables often have non-solid tops-instead the top is a metal mesh, although it's much stronger than mesh wire. The table is usually much heavier than the chairs-they can often blow over in a strong wind, although they shouldn't blow all around your yard like folding chairs.

Wooden patio furniture is a good option if you make certain it is treated for outdoor use. If it's not, it won't last too long. However, wooden furniture that has been sealed against the elements can look great and will last just as long as metal furniture, especially if it's made from pine or oak. Generally, wooden furniture and heavy metal furniture run about the same cost, although Adirondack chairs (those large wooden chairs that have spaces between the slats) can be a bit more expensive.

In addition to chars, you'll also want to look for a table for your patio. As mentioned above, some metal tables have solid tops and some have mesh-like tops. Both are useful, although the mesh tops may not be quite as useful since small items can fall through. There are also patio tables that have a metal base with a glass top. These tables are usually heavy enough that they won't blow over during a storm, so you don't have to worry about the glass shattering. However, it's best to lean these tables over if you know a really big storm is coming.

This article has been written by Robbie Stone from OakandPineOnline, a website dedicated to information on White Bedroom Furniture as well as information and guides on Pine and Oak Furniture available online.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Rob_D_Stone

Adding A Deck

There are many different shapes and sizes for decks. Some are in a circular or octagon shape adding the style of the back yard when graced with flowers and plants strategically placed around the deck. Use timbers and wood to create a custom pattern weaving the designs for a new look. Add a grill or barbeque pit to the area. Add hanging outdoor lights over the cooking area. Add a built in seat area on the deck to provide additional room and comfort for the outside visitors.

Using the available plans for the deck is easy since there are many ways to locate the perfect design for your back yard. The internet and the home improvement store have numerous deck designs you can choose. The option of creating a customized deck appeals to many since they incorporate into the deck their personalized tastes such as steps or raised panels.

To prolong the life of the wood, make sure to use a sealant over surfaces. The sealant can be a clear coat or a stained color to enhance the colors of the natural wood. Most lumber is pretreated yet it is still a good idea to seal the wood to keep the wood from warping and twisting from the exposure to the elements. Taking the time to seal the wood is adding longer life to the deck and saving money in the end.

The project of adding the deck may include having your friends help. This is a great opportunity to spend time with your friends and use their muscles for the heavy lifting of the wood for deck. You can make it a fun time by having a cookout during the middle of the day for a much needed break and time of relaxation before finishing the project.

The standard deck can be completed in one to two days. The usual time is one day when everything goes according to plans. The plans will need to include all the materials so you do not have to stop to make a trip to the home improvement store for more materials.

However, you decide to build the deck, take the time to design the deck to meet all of your demands for the finished area. This will make it possible for you enjoy the deck without having to make modifications later. You will be able to sit and enjoy the beautiful addition to the home without the desires to make any further changes.

Ideas For Remodeling.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kittipong_Unparsert

Accessorizing the Adirondack Rocker

For hours of carefree relaxation, and Adirondack rocker is the way to go. Also, it is a simple but enjoyable way to get some fresh air outside, relax in front of the television, or comfort a crying infant. Rocking chairs are a part of American culture nostalgia, and they're also shown to reduce stress and increase circulation. To get the most out of these nurturing comforters and miracle healers, try adding a padded cushion to your Adirondack rocker. Here are some suggestions for you to get started.

The distinct form of an Adirondack chair is constructed to be ergonomic, with a long, sloping back for spinal support and often a contoured, rounded back and seat to envelop the body and take the stress off certain areas by giving muscles a break. For people with fragile tailbones, people in need of extra lumbar support, or those suffering from hemorrhoids, a little extra padding may be desired. Being seated in one spot for too long might lead to pressures sores, discomfort and even painful bruising.

In addition to being comfortable, a special seat cushion is a cozy touch that might help to brighten up a room. Choose from different colors and prints, like plaid or floral. Chair pads designed specifically for indoor usage are made from soft fabrics like suede, toile and many more, each with a fluffy polyester fiberfill. They can come as one piece which fits just over the seat, one larger piece that fits over both the seat and the back, or two separate pieces. Some types of cushions are free-sitting, while o

Some cushions move around freely, while others are affixed to the chair frame, usually with a simple fabric tie. In addition, some cushions come with a built-in or matching non-slip chair pad so you are not sliding around on your seat. To achieve this, a latex backing is used, which creates friction against the wood, helping it to stick. Some materials, like Jamaica micro fiber, are both comfortable and slip-resistant. The majority of cushions also have the benefit of being reversible, so when one side begins to become flattened, simply untie and flip it over for a more even seat.

Outdoor cushions are constructed somewhat differently. If you are planning on keeping your Adirondack rocker on the porch or in the backyard, you are going to need a cushion that can stand up to the elements. Outdoor patio cushions are made using waterproof fabrics, like Sunbrella that are tear resistant, and will not fade color in the sun. Also, they are made from synthetic fiber that is easy to wipe clean and even hose off. For mild stains, use soap and warm water, while more stubborn spots and the accumulation of mildew can be approached using diluted bleach or chlorine in water. What is also nice about outdoor fabrics is that they are woven together instead of being one single piece of fabric, so they breathe better and won't heat up even when they're left out in the sun. It is important to note, though, that not all cushions are made the same. Some cushion coverings are more comfortable than others. Acrylic linen and canvas-like materials are the softest, while others, like Olefin and Marquesa Blend, tend to be on the bumpier side and rougher to the touch. Yet, the stiffest material by far is PVC, which has the most plastic feel to it. On the upside, it is also the easiest to clean and the most durable.

Whatever material you choose for indoor or outdoor cushions, keep two basic considerations in mind. First of all, make sure the cushion is big enough or else it will not do the job. When tied, a cushion should reach to about halfway up one's back. If you cannot find one long enough, consider having a custom cushion made. They aren't exceedingly expensive and will really help you in the long run. Secondly, think about whether you want to spend a little extra on cushion covers. More than likely, the Adirondack rocker will not be the only piece of furniture in a room, and it is a nice touch to have each piece adhere to the same color palette, if not completely matched. Also, covers keep cushions cleaner and newer looking for longer. Plus, covers are almost always machine washable, while the cushions themselves are obviously not.

Tonya Kerniva is an experienced research and free lance writing professional. Its distinctive oversized armrests and long, sloping back make it one of the most recognizable and popular choices of outdoor seating. From its beginnings in upstate New York, the Adirondack has evolved into a number of models, each uniquely designed and priced accordingly.

$300+
The most expensive Adirondack chair is actually divided into three sub-categories. First of all, name brand and well-respected chairs, like any other product, tend to cost more. For example, the Shakers are acclaimed for their woodwork, while certain name brands can afford to have higher prices because more people prefer them, thus demand is higher. The second reason for having an Adirondack rocker costs upwards o $300 is its age. Antique chairs are a hot commodity, and the ones that are durably constructed and made from hearty woods like teak can easily be passed for much newer chairs while representing a certain era in American history. Hence, they cost a lot. On the other hand, simply being old is not adequate criteria for antique hunters. Furniture that is in disrepair, is broken and not easily restorable has little value to collectors. The third category of expensive rockers is the one that comprises those fancy, creme de la crème chairs, many of which come with extra bells and whistles. For example, many an Adirondack rocker and glider are built specifically for use by pregnant women and new mothers because of their swaying motion which has proven calming ability both pre- and post-birth. There are also especially artistic, ergonomic and one of a kind, rare chairs that are deserving of the extra high price tag. Often the more expensive models are also provided with matching cushions for added comfort. The chairs are practical for both indoor and outdoor use, while many of the simpler rockers would look out of place anywhere but on the porch.

$200-$300
Most middle of the road rocking chairs cost approximately between $200 and $300. When you think of design, this is the classic Adirondack rocker you're picturing. Made from nicer and consequently more expensive woods (like teak and western red cedar) than are cheaper models, these chairs often come with an attractive finish and won't need to be re-oiled for a long time after initial purchase. Fine craftsmanship is exhibited in the detailing, the added lumbar support and rounded chair edges. Many of these chairs also come with their own drink holders owing to the wide arm rests, which all but does away with the need for a table.

$200 and less
Don't be discouraged if you're not looking to spend that much. For under $200 you can pick up a very decent Adirondack rocker. Many chair models around this price point have a specific design and are called Appalachian "settin" chairs. Their distinct form starts with the long back support of the Adirondack with or without armrests. Paired with the curved seat of the chair, the two sections together offer total body support. Often times, this type of Adirondack rocker is made using pieces of unfinished wood (like pine for example), laid out side by side in rows that taper along the top and bottom so that the slats are wider than a normal wood chair but not so wide as to feel uncomfortable. Many of these lightweight seats also have the luxury of folding up, so you can take them along to barbecues, tailgating parties and more.

Whatever your price range, an Adirondack rocker is a good investment. From the simple to the ornate, the cheap to the steep, this classic style of outdoor seating brings harmony to your living space and helps to melt away all those extra the worries in your life.

Tonya Kerniva is an experienced research and free lance writing professional. A bountiful oasis, gorgeous flower beds, a pond and gazebo perhaps? It's easy to overlook something as simple as a garden bench in some backyards. They say the devil is in the details, but by taking into account the little things, what you're left with is a heavenly looking display. Besides, benches are useful both indoors and out as part of a workspace or when you just need to stop and smell the roses.

Wood
When you think classic garden bench, most likely your mind will wander to an image of some wooden park bench somewhere, or one sitting outside your favorite café. Wood benches can be something as simple as two slats with legs to fancier models like the S-shaped courting bench and the other versions like the Tahawus and also gliders and swings. When you look at the market, there are many kinds of wood lumber that are used to build these benches, but some are undoubtedly more durable than others. Class 1 hardwood teak, for one example, is especially valuable. Teak has the distinct privilege of naturally producing oils which protect it from everything you could want: cracking, rot, infestations, mildew and more. Many park benches in Europe are made from repurposed teak ship decks, some up to a century old.

Metal
A wrought iron garden bench affords the buyer a good amount of creativity of design than do some other materials. For one, you can get a lot more detailed than with wood. These benches can be straight, curved, backless, and with simple slatted designs to more intricately welded patterns. Wrought iron makes people think of that envied Victorian England look which gives gardens an air of romanticism. Some benches are a wood and metal combination for a different look, and some metal benches also come with cushions for extra padding, since iron isn't particularly forgiving. As with any outdoor furniture, metal requires some upkeep, and be sure to purchase only those models with certified rust-resistant coating and the hardware to match. Regularly clean with a wire brush and repaint as needed to avoid rust formation. If iron's not your thing, take a look at aluminum. It's slightly cheaper and more lightweight than iron and looks just as quality.

Concrete
Both for residential and commercial use, a concrete garden bench is a steadfast choice. Concrete is best in mild weather regions; it does not tolerate repeated or prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures. There are two basic designs associated with concrete. The classic look refers to ancient Greek and European styles, while many benches also come with personalization kits to make them commemorative. The bad thing about concrete is obviously how heavy it is. Once you find a spot for it, don't plan on moving it for awhile.

Stone
To the untrained eye, stone and concrete are almost identical, in look at least. Stone benches often take on classical designs and give off the same sophisticated look. Unfortunately, also like concrete, stone is just as heavy. On the upside, stone is much more weather-resistant than concrete. That means they're more useful in colder climate regions and will last longer in the long-run. However, the material itself is simply more expensive than concrete to begin with, but still a fine choice for a garden bench.

Resin
Innovations in patio furniture seem to revolve around new, sustainable materials. The resin garden bench, along with other resin furniture is made from a specific type of plastic which is extremely strong. Resin is the chameleon of the patio set world, as it can change shape, color and texture to emulate wood, metal and stone. But it also toots its own horn, adopting infinite colors, patterns and modern designs dreamed up by today's great architects. Resin is great because it's one of the cheaper buys. Plus, a lot of it comes from recycled material. That's not all. Resin is waterproof, easy to clean and doesn't require sealants, oils or paints. On the downside, leaving resin out in the sun makes it hot to the touch and also subject to cracking or warping.

Tonya Kerniva is an experienced research and free lance writing professional. Everything from closets and cabinets, to attics and garages are there to organize your life. But when it comes to outdoor storage, there is not the same kind of resources available. Certain types of garden bench come with built-in storage compartments so that gardeners and backyard entertainers can keep their tools of the trade out of sight but close at hand.

Of the many options for a storage garden bench, the building material is exactly the same for that of other types of outdoor benches. Seats can be made from wood, wicker, resin and more. Obviously, heavier materials like stone and concrete will not work as well in housing some sort of inner compartment, but even with these you can have, say, a lower shelf beneath the seat of the bench.

Many o the storage benches designed specifically for this purpose and outdoor use are made from extremely sturdy plastics and rubber, such as the Rubbermaid brand. These materials will keep your goods more protected than anything else against moisture, insects, mildew and more. However, rubber is kind of an eyesore. Wood, a classic choice for outdoor furniture also works well outside and is quite adaptable to the elements. For instance, cedar and pine, if maintained with regular oiling, are quite sturdy. The best wood money can buy, though, would have to be teak. The so-called "king of hardwoods" produces natural oils which protect against rot, insects and more, making teak furniture almost maintenance free.

If you choose to go with a wood garden bench, the design options are nearly endless. Some benches have low backrests, some are backless. A lot of benches have armrests, a lot don't. Others yet, especially indoor benches, have soft cushions for added comfort. From a functional point of view, the upper part of the bench doesn't really matter at all. It's what is underneath wherein the similarities lie. To be classified as a storage bench, a seat needs to have just that; some sort of space for storage. And there's pretty much nowhere else to fit things but under the seat of the bench.

Depending on what model of garden bench you purchase, the storage compartments vary in how they look and operate. For one, there's the hinged bench. These benches open much like either a piano bench, from the top, or from the front like a set of cabinets, operating on a hinge, and revealing a recessed space within. These benches work best indoors unless you're sure that your hinges are made from rust-resistant hardware. These types of benches are roomiest because it's one large space that covers the entire area underneath the seat down to the ground, rather than separate compartments.

There are also drawers, trays and baskets that pull or slide out. Some models of garden bench have sliding drawers that pull out on a track, like dresser drawers. The kinds of storage compartments that are not attached to the bench usually rest on a lower shelf beneath the seat. These compartments can be nice-looking woven baskets to sturdier wood buckets, the latter of which matches the bench itself. What's convenient about containers that rest on a shelf under the bench, rather than on a slide mechanism, are that they can more easily be taken out and moved around than attached drawers. Also, when separate from the bench, the baskets and wood containers can look fine on their own. If you do prefer having a bench indoors, great spots to keep one are the entryway, bedroom and breakfast nook, or wherever you need a little extra storage.

Tonya Kerniva is an experienced research and free lance writing professional. In Japan, there are three main types of nihon teien, or gardens: Tsukiyama Gardens (hill gardens), Karesansui Gardens (dry or rock gardens) and Chaniwa Gardens (tea gardens). These green spaces are common all over Japan and can be found in such places as public parks, Buddhist temples and also many private residences. Also, it is something not just limited to Japan. Japanese gardens have popped up the world over, with breathtaking examples in even just the United States. Often, they are tucked into larger botanical gardens, so this is a good place to look. Check out the ones in your area for some inspiration to bring home. Odds are, your own backyard oasis will not harbor quite the elaborate setup, but still a few authentic touches will give your garden an authentic Asian feel and overall beautiful look.

To the adherents of traditional philosophy, gardens represent the whole of nature, just on a much smaller scale. They are tranquil and beautiful places created with an artistic sensibility in mind where one can spend hours relaxing and contemplating the finer things in life. Its roots can be traced back to a religious basis, back when gardens were first associated with Buddhist, Taoist and Shinto ideologies. Today, while the overt religious meaning is not so prevalent, there is still a spirituality and reverence one naturally feels when entering these peaceful spots. In addition to the religious aspect, Japanese garden making is considered as fine an art as the Asian practices of flower arranging (ikebana) and calligraphy. Besides that, gardens are just a nice break from the hectic pace of life. With so much time spent there, a garden bench is a welcome respite.

You might be surprised to learn that Japanese garden benches don't necessarily have one specific design. The traditional ones are made from stone, usually with room for one to two persons. Left unpainted, they are adorned with simply carved designs running from the base along up through the armrests. However, in reality you can make a Japanese garden bench from the same materials out of which you would build any bench. Concrete, wood, plastics, etc can be used for this purpose as well so long as the ambience is there to support it. The main point about these benches is not so much how they look as their purpose and surroundings. The basic purpose is contemplation, though in Western terms this might equate to something more like "Stop and smell the roses." When it comes to the surrounding environment, having a tranquil space filled with beautiful flowers and green foliage will naturally evoke this peaceful state. It might also be a nice touch to add indigenous Asian plants to complete the effect, such as Japanese Maple trees or Bonsais.

If you really want to do it up right, there are other items you can add in addition to the garden bench. Traditional Japanese gardens also usually come with some sort of fencing, often made out of bamboo; a water source, like ponds and fountains; as well as lanterns, bridges and pavilions. The nice thing is, you don't necessarily have to stick to one theme. Your backyard is your sanctuary, so decorate it as you want to. Whichever styles you choose, a garden bench of any sort is a nice fixture to be able to immerse yourself in the fauna and admire all of your hard work.

Tonya Kerniva is an experienced research and free lance writing professional. You are now thinking of ways to enhance the area to make it attractive and a great place where you can hold small gatherings for family and friends. How about adding a garden patio with an elevated deck?

Picture your patio with lots of flowers and wonderful plants big and small. And then add to that a wooden deck which is a bit elevated for a fantastic effect. Does that give you a feeling of joy and excitement? It should because of the beauty you can achieve in your backyard with this idea.

Your deck project should not cost you much especially if you want to go hands on in constructing it. You may need to consult a professional designer first to determine the proper measurements for your deck appropriate for your available space outdoors. After that, you can start listing your materials and then order them.

For the deck, you will need decking boards which you can place in the pattern of your choice. If it's an elevated one that you want, a strong and solid base and frame are essential. The decking boards will have to be laid straight and firm to make a sturdy deck.

You have to remember though that a deck would not be complete without a railing. A deck railing will ensure the safety of the area especially when there are small kids around. It will also prevent falls notably when the deck you have is elevated from the ground. Be sure to check your local building codes to guide and help you build a compliant deck railing.

In making your deck railing, you have various options not only in terms of materials but as well as in the sizes. For the top rails, you have a choice between using the 2x4 or 2x6 wood. Both can be installed horizontally or vertically. It can also have a slight slope to allow water to shed easily and prevent rotting.

For the posts, you can have them protrude at corners or at the end only. Another option is to have protruding posts at each railing section for a different look or at you can alternate them. It all depends on your preference.

Moving to the bottom rails, typically the 2x4 size is used. But you may need to bevel the edges a bit to let water flow easily and not stay on the flat surface.

In between the top and bottom rails are the so-called balusters or pickets which normally use the 2x2s. These can actually be screwed directly to the deck without using a bottom rail. Balusters and posts are available in different designs such as the colonial, twisted, tapered, plain, square and Victorian.

A wooden deck provides a classic look but you have to know that you can combine it with other materials such as a glass or metal deck railing for a more wonderful effect. Again, it will all depend on what style you like for your garden patio.

For more information on deck rails, please visit BuyRailings.com, a leading distributor of railings, hand and foot rails, curtain rods and more.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kalyan_Kumar

Keeping Your Teak Lounger Clean

You have made the purchase of a teak lounger - one of the best investments you can make for your patio. And because it is such a high investment, you want to make sure you are going to get the best out of it. This includes keeping it clean throughout the seasons - if you are going to pay a high amount for your investment, you want it looking good all year round, right? But the elements have another idea in mind: bringing it down with the sunshine, rain, and heat. This will not only give your lounger all the dirt and debris it can handle, but also fade the color over time.

You will not be the only one to combat the elements adversely affecting your teak lounger. But knowing how to keep it clean is the secret to making sure your lounger's color lasts all year round, and make sure it stays looking brand new.

Everyone knows the easiest way to keep your teak lounger looking good all summer long is to constantly keep it clean, keeping dirt and debris off of it. The easiest way to do this is by using a mild cleaner, like dish soap, and mixing it with warm water. Mix it well in a bucket, and scrub your troubles away with a sponge or soft cloth. Once complete, your lounger can be left to naturally dry away in the sun. If you need to do a little deeper clean, try taking a pressure washer to your lounger, after you scrub down with soap and water. By doing this often, you will ensure that your furniture will have a nice glow that it came with from day one.

If keeping it clean regularly doesn't work, then try applying a special teak cleaner to your teak lounger. Many retailers and specialty shops sell teak cleaners that are specially made to get past the dulling exterior, and revitalize it once more with a natural shine. Many of the formulations are non-toxic, and not oil based (so they are environmentally and pet friendly). And because they are a specialized cleaner, their effects will last for months, as opposed to weeks. Keep teak cleaners in mind when shopping around for the right cleaning agent for your lounger.

If none of the above work, perhaps it is time to consider refinishing your teak lounger. That's right - if your lounger is too gray to save, it may be time to sand it down evenly, until the golden exterior shines through once more. Be very careful as to how much you sand off: sand off too much, and you will be lowering the life expectancy for your lounger. Once the sanding is complete, apply an oil treatment to your teak, and you will be prepared once more to let the golden hue shine through.

Keeping your teak lounger clean should not be a tough process. With regular maintenance, a little know how, and all the right tools, you can make sure your furniture will be at its finest all year round. With a little dedication now, you too can make sure your outdoor patio furnishings are good to go all summer long.

Joe Cortez is a freelance writer with diverse interests including home and garden, outdoor furniture and backyard living. Where will it go, how will it be used, what materials to use for construction and how long it will last are just a few of these. Choosing to use the tropical hardwood, IPE can help answer a few of the tough questions, particularly the one about how long it will last. Not only does this wood answer the question about the lifespan of the proposed project, it can help address a few others as well.

This wood comes from a species of tree that is indigenous to a tropical environment. Found throughout South America and Central America, it can also be found in some parts of Asia. The botanical name for the tree is Tabebuia spp. (Lapacho group) but it also goes by several common names which include Brazilian Walnut, Amapa, Cortez, Guayacan polvillo, Flor Amarillo, Greenheart, Madera negra, Tahuari and Lapacho negro. Trade names for the tree included, Pau Lope, Diamond Decking and Ironwood.

When used as a material for decking on outdoor projects it is hard to find another wood that can top all the advantages that IPE offers. These advantages include resistance to rot, mildew and insect infestation.

In a study done by the United States Naval Research Laboratories, wood that had been left in the ground untreated for fifteen years still showed no signs of termite attack. Also extremely resistant to decay and mildew, this wood lasts 40 plus years untreated and the United States Forest Products Laboratory gave the wood its highest rating. It found that with a single treatment of deck oil applied to the surface, up to a hundred years without attack by decay, fungi, mold and termites could be expected from projects constructed with this wood.

Ipe wood is approximately seven times harder that cedar and has a Janka rating of 3680. That makes this hardwood more than 368% harder than teak and it is much cheaper as well.

The unique properties of this wood are conferred by the dense cell structure found in the tree. It is one of the heaviest woods in the world and it actually sinks in water. It is the incredibly dense cell structure that is also responsible for the astonishing longevity of projects constructed using the hardwood. So durable is this amazing wood that when the city leaders of Atlantic City were faced with having to repair the famous boardwalk there, they chose to Ipe wood for the project.

In terms of decking around pools and hot tubs, this wood has several characteristics that make it ideal for this environment. This wood exceeds the Americans with Disabilities act requirements for Static Coefficient of friction in a wet environment and is strongly resistant to splintering. These are both important factors when contemplating decking to be used in a wet environment with lots of bare feet around. When you want a product that is maintenance free, safe and reliable, no other deck material can compare to the advantages of IPE wood.

Ronnie Tanner is a contributing writer at Everlasting Hardwoods. And, naturally, it certainly was: it added a new touch of class to your deck that allows for the highest pinnacle of comfort for your family and friends. With this lounger, your entire deck is complete! All that is left to do now is to sit back and let the people come drawn like moths to a flame.

That being said, once the novelty of your teak lounger wears off, you may find that it is no longer nearly as alluring as it was in the past. Your guests aren't fighting for the comfort like they once were, or they are no longer climbing all over each other to have the chair of honor. After a while...your lounger no longer becomes the pinnacle and centerpiece of your furniture. Rather, it just becomes another chair, old and gray in the demeanor that it holds itself to.

If you find that your teak lounger no longer holds the same value in the hearts of your family and friends, perhaps it is time to spice it up a little bit. Sure, you can re-sand it over and over again, and bring out the golden hue that it once had. But how much will that achieve? What will that make happen? Rather, you need to find new and creative ways to make your lounger look more appealing - not only to your family and friends, but to yourself as well.

One of the easiest ways to make your teak lounger look a lot more appealing is by adding a cushion to the chair itself. Because of the popularity of these chairs, there is a high demand for these cushions - making them readily available at your beck and call. Adding the right cushion will help to make your teak lounger feel more comfortable, and immediately draw people in. Because it doesn't absorb heat as well as other metals, it will not be hot to the touch. Furthermore, because it is cushioned, it will offer a gentile place for your weary travelers to rest themselves as they prepare for their days ahead.

As you may be adding a cushion to your teak lounger, you may want to consider buying a small deck box as well? A deck box is the ultimate in seasonal storage! In the summer, the deck box serves as the best place to store your cushions when not in use. In the winter, the deck box can hold all of those items that will not be needed until the sun returns to shine once more. And with the variety of shapes, style, and construction materials, your deck box will not only look good, but stand up to every weather phenomenon it can bring.

If those ideas don't seem to work for you, perhaps you should consider something to add a little more permanent comfort for your teak lounger. Adding a canopy or umbrella can certainly add value to not only your patio, but also provide a shady place to enjoy the long summer days. Why sweat it out throughout the summer, when you can enjoy every day in the shade?

When the allure of your teak lounger seems to wear off, perhaps it is time to consider adding to the collection. By placing key items around your lounger, you too can make sure it is the toast of the town all summer long.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Joe_Cortez

Awnings & Shade

Summer time can be a great time to enjoy the outside spaces around your home, but the sun can be a brutal companion. In order to get some much needed respite from its powerful gaze you should consider going with a patio awning. These devices can provide some much needed protection from the sun. There are two main reasons that you might want to get protection from the sun, to protect yourself and your patio furniture from harmful UV rays and to provide a cooler environment in which to relax.

There is little doubt that UV rays have been linked to an increase in the occurrence of skin cancer. There is also lots of evidence that it increases the appearance of wrinkles in the skin as well. If you doubt it, just watch some TV and you will see tons of commercials talking about the latest cream to help protect your skin from these two ill effects of its life giving rays.

But you don't need a lotion to protect you from the sun, you need a patio awning. An awning will keep you safe from the sun while also protecting your furniture as well. Just like your skin, the fabric on your furniture doesn't like to be exposed to the sun either. The sun's rays do two things to most patio furniture: fades its color and breaks down its fabric, making it more prone to suffer from normal wear and tear.

Getting an awning to provide constant shade in the summer months will help keep your skin safe and your furniture looking as good as the day that you bought it.

The second thing that patio awnings can help do for your patio is to make the environment much, much cooler. You see, much of the heat generated on concrete patios is directly related to the direct sunlight shining down from above and then reflective off of the white concrete surface below. Not only can this be extremely hot, it can also be blinding to the eyes as well. By erecting a protective surface between you, your patio floor, and your patio furniture and the sun you will cut out the primary source of heat (direct sunlight) and a secondary source (the reflection off the white concrete) in one fell swoop.

The best thing about patio awnings is that you get all this rolled up in one affordable package. You also have a lot of choice as to how you want the awning to look. You have a choice of materials in wood, fabric, or aluminum. You even have a wide array of colors to choose from as well.

With a patio awning you get robust protection from the sun in one very cost effective package.

Joe writes for Patio Awnings Inc. There you can find information on all things patio awning - from different type of aluminum awnings, how to clean them, and what are some pros and cons with going with this type of option. Nobody will be able to refuse the delicious taste of burgers and hot dogs and some delicious steaks. The one thing that can make things better for us is if we had outdoor patio furniture that can serve to make everybody more comfortable.

As soon as the warm weather starts furniture stores around the city start to put out their patio furniture sets for individuals to select from. Every year we look at some traditional sets and sometimes we are given a peek at something brand new and inventive. Be careful with the type that you choose to make sure that you are given something that you have the ability to enjoy and that will last a long time.

It would be smart to do research and read up on the best companies to buy from. Keep in mind that just because they have a brand name embossed on them does not automatically mean that they are the greatest to own. A great example of this is the Martha Stewart patio furniture sets. Numerous people have complained that they were not constructed properly and broke after just a couple of months use.

There are steps that you can take to make sure that the outdoor furniture you purchase is going to stay protected and in great condition for many months. Most are constructed to be weather tolerable - but the one season that can damage it the most is winter. Things are able to get exceedingly cold and they are often covered by snow and ice.

The best thing you will be able to buy to keep them well preserved around this time are patio furniture covers. These are made to resist both very hot and cold temperatures and can even assist to keep the rain from wrecking any cushions.

Learn how Patio Furniture Covers can help to protect Patio Furniture Cushions from the rain and sun.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Naomi_West

IPE Wood Furniture

It is summer time and there is no better place to spend a good portion of it than with your family in the back yard. In order to do that, every year people all over the country look for the perfect outdoor furniture. While it may have proven elusive in the past, the hunt is over. If you are looking for beautiful, durable and weather proof, then look no further. Outdoor furniture made from Ipe wood delivers all of this and more.

This tropical hardwood is widespread throughout South America and Central America. It is found in a variety of places from ridge tops to riverbanks and is also easily grown in managed forests as well. This commercially valuable tree is not an endangered species and most of the stock that arrives in the United States originates from forests, which bare the Forest Stewardship Council certification. Stock receiving this certification helps encourage sustainable forestry practices and offers the best remedy to exploitive deforestation.

Dark brown in color, the heartwood of Ipe is often beautifully striped with alternating light and dark striping. This natural dark color can be retained by applying a treatment of deck oil that contains UV protection. If preferred however traditional weathering will gradually change the color of the wood to handsome gray patina.

The incredibly dense cell structure of this tree is what conveys some of its most valuable properties. With a natural resistance to insect infestation, fungi, water damage and warping, this wood makes an ideal material with which to build outdoor projects. Tests conducted during construction of the Panama by the United States Naval Research Laboratory the United States Forest Products Laboratory found that wood left in the ground for 15 years was still without any termite infestation. Ipe was also tested by the United States Forest Products Laboratory which gave the wood its highest rating as well and found that the heartwood is very resistant to attack by decay fungi and mold, lasting as long as 40 years without any treatment and up to 100 years with just a single treatment of deck oil applied to the surface.

It is not only the durability of the wood that is so incredible; this wood also has amazing safety features. When used for decking around pools and hot tubs, it is incredibly slip resistant when wet. This hardwood exceeds the Americans with Disabilities act requirements for Static Coefficient of friction in a wet environment, providing an extra layer of protection in areas where falls can be dangerous. In addition to slip resistance, decking made from the heartwood of this tree is also very resistant to splintering which is a plus for using in seating and flooring.

With so many items today considered disposable, it is a refreshing change to find a product that can be expected to last a lifetime with such little maintenance. Ipe furniture is affordable as well and cost much less than other tropical hardwoods. When compared to the amount of money it will take if less durable furniture is bought and replaced over the course of a lifetime, furniture made from this incredible hardwood is a deal.

Ronnie Tanner is a contributing writer at Everlasting Hardwoods. If your porch or backyard goes unused much of the summer due to the heat, consider this fabulous, comfortable solution. An outdoor mister is an all-in-one kit designed to cool the air by as much as 20 degrees. You can enjoy the outdoors all summer long.

Outdoor misters are easy to install and they are surprisingly affordable. They use a fine water mist from your garden hose to cool your outdoor areas, from patios to decks to porches to greenhouses or pet area. Misting systems come with hoses, adjustable nozzles, hanging clamps, and draining valves. What is so nice is that no electricity or batteries are required - it all works with the power of your garden hose.

You simply attach the mist line to any outdoor area such as the eves of your porch roof or your porch railing. Then you connect the mist line to your garden hose, adjust the nozzles the way you like and then be ready to feel the coolness almost immediately! Take a 90-degree day, add an outdoor misting system, and you will feel much more comfortable cooler air right away. Imagine what a difference that will make when you entertain outdoors or simply want to read a book on your deck in the summer heat.

An outdoor mister is one of those "wish I would have thought of that" inventions. Why spend another hot day inside when you can enjoy your porch to the fullest with a misting system? Combine that with a few strategically placed porch blinds and you will have the best summer ever. Imagine how your pets would appreciate a misting system this summer!

To learn more about outdoor misters, please visit http://www.front-porch-ideas-and-more.com/outdoor-mister.html.

Mary Morris is a porch lover and grandma. Not necessarily, in warmer areas, the heat of the midday sun, but enough sun to give you that good sense of relaxation and well being that we get when exposed to lots of vitamin D.

Patios are also a hub for family-centered activities: a place for meals; for children to play; for lengthy conversations that lead to important decisions; and for friends to gather outside around the barbecue.

However, it is possible to have too much sun. Patio awnings allow you to enjoy the sun's warmth without becoming burned by the sun, and provide protection against passing showers too. Patio awnings, canopies or shades are a very useful addition to your outdoor comfort.

An awning can be either fixed or retractable. A fixed awning, as its name suggests, stays in the same position all the time. It is usually some type of shade cloth fixed to a permanent frame of steel or aluminium. Retractable awnings can be swiftly stowed away, and are available in either powered or manually operated versions. In climates where permanent awnings must be dismantled at the approach of winter and erected again in spring, retractable awnings, which can be left in their cassette all year round, are especially useful.

An alternative to a complete awning is a shade sail. Shade sails can be custom made to any size you require, or you can combine a number of smaller ones to cover a larger area (the solution you choose will depend partly on your site, and partly on your budget). Shade sails work by a tension system - the sails, often triangular in shape, are anchored to tension points which may be attached to the walls of the dwelling or to the tops of poles sunk into the ground. They have the advantage of being portable: if you sell your home, you can move the sail to your new home and reinstall it for the price of new tension points.

Shade structures were once all made from canvas. However, today there are many colourful acrylic fibres that are woven together to make shade cloths. The cloths are long lasting and tough, making damage from wind or storm unlikely. The closeness of the weave creates different levels of protection against the sun, giving the consumer yet more choice about the amount of protection desired - and cost, too.

Shade protection given by patio awnings and shade sails keeps the sun-lover safe from painful overexposure to the sun. They can also reduce glare, and can be found in colors to suit any existing color scheme.

Article from Steve Boulden of The Landscape Design Site which offers galleries and pictures of patio design ideas, courtyard plans, and landscape designs. Not only do they create a social atmosphere, but if you choose the right one, the area it's in can be totally transformed. A dining table can last you for a number of years, so it's important to chose the right one!

There's a lot to consider when choosing a dining table such as the size, colour, shape and material it's made from. It's important to picture it in your living area or on your garden patio...so a good idea is to take go and browse through a wide range of tables, photographing the best ones. You can then take the photo home and see if the table fits in.

You should consider what the main use of the dining table will be. Are you going to use it to entertain family, friends and work collegues...or will it be used to dish up food for the kids? There's a big difference in price between top quality tables and dining tables for every day; however if you chose correctly, you can pick a table that will serve both purposes perfectly, and for relatively cheap!

The position of the table on your garden patio or in your living area is crucial, as it will be the main focus. Don't just abandon it in the middle of the room, as it will look well out of place. Therefore you should think carefully about where it will go, taking note of details like distance from walls, ease of access and position in relation to windows. Will it be easy to serve food too? Does it allow you to enjoy the view of your beautiful garden? These are important questions to consider. You should draw up a few sketches of the area, and varying positions of the table...this will allow you to make the best decision.

Once you get your table home, it's important to take care of it well. You should consider purchasing some place mats to avoid marking the table, and you should wipe the table down with a clean cloth following every use. This will ensure your table lasts a long time.

Furnishing your dining table can be just as important a decision as buying the table itself. You don't want to cover it with a cloth so it's invisible, neither do you want to leave it bare so it can be damaged. Generally a minimalist style works best, so consider purchasing a nice vase to go with the table, and then add some nice flowers.

Purchase the perfect dining table for your living area or garden patio today, and totally transform the feel of your property!

How To Build A Deck

Decks can be a great feature in a garden depending on the shape and size. They are often cheaper than traditional patios and features can be incorporated, such as swimming pools, jacuzzis and even fires!

Here's how to put together a deck in 23 easy steps!

Step1
Check drainage and grading where the deck will be built and fix any problems. Avoid disturbing the soil where the footings will go because footings need to set in undisturbed soil to prevent settling.

Step2
Set the ledger against the house wall or other solid structure and attach with lag screws. This must be done against a flat surface. Removing house siding will create a flat surface, but will create leaks, so it is not recommended. Instead, use shims to create a flat surface. When setting your ledger you need to consider your decking material height/thickness. If you desire your deck to be level with an adjacent floor, your deck should be directly below the door jam of that room when finished.

Step3
Flashing should be installed between any wood and the house (unless it is a stucco house, then no need for flashing)

Step4
Mark the foundation with string line, then mark the footing and post locations.

Step5
Cast concrete footings in the ground, then attach the concrete piers on top to hold the posts. (Check building codes for required depth for footings.) Piers can be cast in place or pre-made.

Step6
Let footings cure for at least a week.

Step7
Cut a post longer than the required length, then set it in the post anchor on top of a pier.

Step8
Check the post for plumb, using a carpenter's level. Then use a line level or water level to mark the post so it is the same height as the bottom of the joists. If the joists are to sit directly on the posts, mark the level and cut the post. If the joists are to sit on a beam set on the post, subtract that height, then mark and cut the beam.

Step9
Set the post in place and secure.

Step10
Follow the same procedure for all other posts, marking and cutting them individually to allow for any height variations.

Step11
Nail or bolt any beams in place, then attach any necessary bracing. Add any rim joists at this time and check to see they're square.

Step12
Decide on a decking pattern and the spacing of the deck boards. Starting at one end of the ledger, mark the location of the first joist. Continue marking along the ledger. Transfer the joist markings to a scrap piece of lumber, then mark the beam opposite the ledger.

Step13
Add joist hangers, then fasten the joists in place. Set the joists so the crown, or bowed side, faces up. Add any required blocking for stability.

Step14
Set posts for railings, benches, and overheads in place, and install any plumbing or wiring. Install railings that go through the deck.

Step15
Add stairs now or wait until the decking is finished.

Step16
Apply any protective finishes to the deck substructure.

Step17
Cut the decking boards to the correct length, then start laying them across the joists, beginning at the ledger and setting the convex side up if attractive. Boards can run long.

Step18
Fasten boards to the deck with nails or screws. Add spacing between the boards, as needed.

Step19
Adjust the width of the final board as needed, either by setting a slightly wider board in place or cutting one so it is less wide. Check as you go along to plan for this.

Step20
Once the final board is set, cut off any long ends.

Step21
Add any railings that sit outside the deck and any stairways not added earlier.

Step22
Add amenities, such as benches and planters.

Step23
          Apply any protective finishes.

Make sure you have the following basic tools available before starting to construct your deck

-Bulb Planters
-Galvanized Nails
-Lag Screws
-Hammers
-Levels
-Flashing
-Concrete Piers
-Benches
-String Line
-Wooden Posts
-Ledgers
-Joist hangers

For a bit more information, check out these great sites on Deck Construction, Designing Wooded Decks and Decks

How To Design Your Patio

Having trouble designing your patio? The Pawleys Island range includes rope and fabric hammocks, allowing you to choose the right hammock for your garden patio.

The Pawleys Island rope hammock is tailor made for two, from 100% natural cotton yarns. This natural fibre is soft and creates a comfortable hammock bed. Over a thousand feet of rope is used to construct the durable woven bed and uses double-latch construction adding greater comfort and strength. The hand-tied bowline knots are designed to tighten with each use. The hammocks are designed to support 450 lbs. and come complete with heavy duty zinc chromate hardware that resists rust. The two inch diameter ring and welded chain ensure the hammocks safety after years of use. The supplied zinc plated hook and eye bolt assembly is the largest used in the industry for added protection against stress.

Pawleys Island also offer a range of fabric hammocks. The quilted hammock range is made from layers of weather-resistant fabric and plush polyester filling, married into a comfy quilted bed to provide a hammock design built to be enjoyed for years. This hammock design is especially popular for individuals that want full body support and not the grid of a rope hammock. Quilted hammocks also provide the ability to dress one's backyard in a coordinated color palette matching other fabric items and décor styles. Once all these factors are taken into consideration, the plush comfort is the icing on the relaxation cake known as a quilted hammock!

The quick dry fabric hammock from Pawleys Island is a perfect addition to a pool patio, or patio with lots of shade. It has many beautiful colour options woven to breathe allowing generous air flow for fast drying. You can forget any worries if your little ones want to crawl up into the hammock in a wet suit, as this hammock cannot fade from chlorine and has a water regain factor of less than .01%. If your shady spot does not catch many rays of sun, this hammock's ability to resist moisture will make it always ready for your enjoyment.

Invest in one of the best hammocks in the world and add a new relaxing dimension to your garden patio. They bring a stylish but calming aura to your patio, and they are also extremely comfortable!

There are 2 main types of hammock- rope and fabric, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages. Fabric hammocks for instance are generally cheaper than rope hammocks, however rope hammocks are more durable. Various different styles of hammock exist- current popular styles include the Spreader-bar, Mayan, Brazilian and Nicaraguan. Hammocks come in different shapes, sizes and a mirriad of colours. One of the best makes of hammock around is Pawleys Island Hammocks.

When choosing the perfect hammock for your patio, it is important to consider the following features: type, design, size, location and hanging. The hammock should fit in well with your patio and not look out of place, ideally it should be placed in an area that gets a mix of sun and shade...and feels the most relaxing. Safety should be the main consideration when hanging a hammock- it should be secured between 2 points that will not move when weight is applied. Trees are ideal, however if you are unable to use trees, Hammock Stands are the way to go.

Hammock stands can make or literally break having a hammock on your garden patio. The hammock stand should be large enough to safely support your hammock, with you in it! Hammock stands come in many different designs and are generally made from either wood or metal. Which hammock stand to choose depends on the type and size of hammock, the location on your garden patio, and of course whether it will look like a worthwhile addition to your patio.

Put up a hammock today and reap the benefits of relaxation!

Patio Heaters

Patio heaters are an essential accessory for any patio. Not only do they provide warmth thereby allowing you to sit outside and enjoy your patio all year round, they can also be a great stylistic edition giving your patio a contemporary, but warm and homely feel.

Patio heaters can be used in any climate, and are great when entertaining friends and family. When it gets too cold, or if there are too many biting insects around, turn on your patio heater and let the party carry on.

There are 2 main types of patio heater- gas and electric. The advantages of gas heaters is that they have superior heating outputs and ranges (generally 16kw over 5-6 meters), are significantly cheaper to run and don't have to be turned off when it rains. Electric heaters on the other hand are cheaper to purchase and easier to handle as they are lighter.

Seriously consider buying a quality patio heater, and enjoy relaxing on your patio further.

Teak Patio Sets

Teak Patio Sets are a great addition to any garden patio, creating a classic Mediterranean feel. Not only do they look great, they are also incredible durable.

Teak is a hugely popular wood for patio furniture because it is naturally water and insect-resistant without requiring chemical treatment. It is a very hard wood, meaning it doesn't lose quality with constant use, and is not affected by suntan lotion, body oil, pool or sea water, or the outdoor elements.

Teak patio furniture comes in a natural golden brown colour, and does not require staining or painting. As teak ages, the wood turns a beautiful grey colour, but can be returned to its natural color quickly and easily with a light sanding.

The best patio furniture is made from Grade “A” Teak which does not have any knots or defects. Some teak park benches in London have been used for more than 70 years, which demonstrates the strength and durability of teak for use in patio furniture.

Purchase your Teak Patio Sets today, and improve your patio massively.

Aluminum Patio Furniture

Aluminum Patio Furniture brings a modern and clean look to any garden patio. Even on the sunniest days, you can enjoy your garden and stay cooler in the shade of your umbrella. Patio umbrellas are one of the best ways to stay outside without absorbing the harmful UV rays.

There are many types of Patio Umbrellas to chose from with different sizes, shapes, colours and materials. Examples include canvas and Sunbrella umbrellas, side post umbrellas with Sundura canopies, and much more. Sunbrella Patio Umbrellas are arguably the best due to the incredible durability of materials and fabrics they are made from.

Before purchasing a Patio Umbrella you should consider important factors such as size, price, construction type, materials (wood, aluminum) and fabrics used. You should also think carefully about the position the umbrella will take on your patio. Patio Umbrellas are obviously quite large and immediately draw focus, so it's essential the umbrella fits in well with your garden patio style.

Enjoy your patio more by investing in a Patio Umbrella.

Patio Awnings

If you really want to add value to your property and make your patio a more habitable space, consider looking into Patio Awnings.

The main reason to purchase a Patio Awning is protection from the sun. Patio Awnings minimise glare and UV rays both indoors and outdoors. By providing shade, they also reduce the amount of heat entering your property through open patio doors- meaning you spend less on air conditioning. Furthermore, with sufficient slope, retractable awnings can protect outdoor areas from rain, providing the material is water resistant. This means you can sit outside and enjoy your patio whatever the weather.

There are 2 basic types of Patio Awning- fixed and retractable. Both come in a variety of different designs, colours and materials. However retractable awnings are generally better as you can position them to suit your needs on a day to day basis.

Chosing the right awning for your patio is as much about personal preference as it is about functionality- however it's important to make the right decision, as a poor quality Patio Awning, or one that looks totally out of place on your patio will ultimately spoil the experience. It may even detract from the value of your property- so get it right!

The first thing to look at is the climate you live in- if it's hot and sunny all year round, maybe steer more towards a fixed Patio Awning. If you live in a seasonal climate, go for a retractable Awning.
